Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure

An honest, plain-English explanation of how How Many Camels Am I Worth earns money — through Google AdSense display advertising, and potentially through affiliate links in future. We commit to clear disclosure, editorial independence, and full UK regulatory compliance.

Effective: 2 July 2026 ASA/CAP Code compliant CPR 2008 compliant
Current status: Google AdSense enabled · No affiliate links

As of 2 July 2026, How Many Camels Am I Worth displays advertising via Google AdSense to fund the Site’s operation. AdSense cookies are consent-gated via our cookie banner. We do not currently carry any affiliate links, sponsored content, or paid placements beyond AdSense. This page sets out our full advertising and affiliate disclosure framework for transparency and UK regulatory compliance.

1. What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is a contextual advertising network operated by Google LLC. Website publishers (like us) add a small piece of Google’s JavaScript code to their pages, and Google’s servers analyse the content of each page and serve advertisements they consider relevant to that content and to the user viewing it. Advertisers pay Google for these ads; Google shares a portion of that payment with the publisher (us).

You will see AdSense ads displayed on various pages of this Site — typically in sidebars, between content sections, or below the fold. Ads are visually labelled “Advertisement” or are clearly distinguishable from editorial content by their layout, styling and an “Ads by Google” indicator that Google may display.

AdSense can operate in two modes, depending on your cookie consent choice:

  • Personalised ads (default for users who accept advertising cookies) — Google uses cookies and other signals to display ads based on your interests. Requires cookies; only enabled after you give consent.
  • Non-personalised ads (default for users who reject advertising cookies) — Google displays ads based only on the content of the current page, without using cookies to track your interests over time. This is the “limited ads” mode.

Full details of the cookies AdSense sets, the data it collects, and how to opt out are in our dedicated Advertising & Cookies Policy. You can manage your ad personalisation preferences globally at Google Ads Settings.

2. What are affiliate links?

An affiliate link is a special type of link that, when you click it and subsequently make a purchase from the linked retailer, earns the linking website a small commission — typically between 1% and 10% of the purchase price — at no additional cost to you. The commission is paid by the retailer as a marketing fee; you pay the same price you would have paid if you had visited the retailer directly.

Affiliate links are a common and legitimate way for content websites to earn revenue without charging readers or displaying intrusive advertising. They are widely used by UK consumer publications including Which?, Trusted Reviews, The Guardian‘s commerce verticals, and most major independent review sites.

Under UK law — specifically the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) and the ASA/CAP Code (UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing) — websites must clearly disclose when content contains affiliate links or otherwise features commercial arrangements that may influence what is recommended.

2. Will we use affiliate links in the future?

We may, at some point in the future, introduce affiliate links on the Site — for example, links to recommended books about camels, camel-themed merchandise, or related experience days. If and when we do, we will:

  • Disclose clearly at the top of any page that contains affiliate links, using wording such as “This page contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.”;
  • Mark individual affiliate links with a visible indicator (for example, an asterisk or “aff” tag) where appropriate;
  • Update this disclosure page to list the specific affiliate programmes we participate in;
  • Never let affiliate relationships influence our editorial recommendations. If we recommend a product, it is because we believe it is worth recommending — not because we earn a commission on it;
  • Comply with all applicable UK regulations including the CPRs, the ASA/CAP Code, and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.

3. Editorial independence

Our editorial content is produced independently of any commercial relationship. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage, we do not accept sponsored posts, and we do not write positive reviews in exchange for affiliate commissions. Any affiliate programme we participate in is selected on the basis of (a) relevance to our content and (b) our genuine belief that the retailer offers good value and service to UK consumers.

If we ever publish content that is sponsored or otherwise commercially arranged — for example, a paid partnership with a UK camel-related attraction — we will disclose that arrangement clearly at the top of the content, in line with the ASA/CAP Code’s requirements for “commercial content” disclosure.

4. No cost to you

If we do introduce affiliate links, clicking one and making a purchase will never increase the price you pay. The commission is paid by the retailer out of their existing margin, not added to your bill. You are completely free to visit the retailer directly (without using our link) if you prefer — you will pay the same price either way.

Using our affiliate links, when present, is a simple way to support the Site at no cost to yourself. We appreciate it when readers do, but there is absolutely no obligation.

5. Affiliate programmes we may join

If we introduce affiliate links in the future, the most likely programmes we would participate in are:

  • Amazon Associates UK — for books, DVDs, and camel-themed merchandise. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
  • Independent UK retailer programmes — for example, programmes operated by UK zoos, wildlife parks, or specialist bookshops that sell camel-related products.
  • Experience day platforms — for example, UK experience day providers that offer animal encounters including (occasionally) camel experiences.

If and when we join any of these programmes, we will update this page with a specific list.

6. Google AdSense — advertising networks we use

As of 2 July 2026, we use Google AdSense as our sole third-party advertising network. We chose AdSense for the following reasons:

  • It allows us to monetise the Site without selling personal data directly to advertisers — Google acts as an intermediary, and we never see the individual data Google collects about you.
  • It supports a “limited ads” mode that allows users who reject advertising cookies to still see non-personalised ads, funding the Site without compromising their privacy.
  • It is the most widely-deployed advertising network on the web, with mature compliance tooling for UK GDPR, PECR and Google’s EU User Consent Policy.

We do not use any of the following:

  • No Google Analytics (we use privacy-friendly Plausible or Fathom if analytics is enabled);
  • No Meta Pixel or Facebook advertising network;
  • No Amazon Associates advertising (we may add Amazon affiliate links in future — see section 5);
  • No Twitter/X advertising pixels;
  • No native advertising widgets from Taboola, Outbrain, or similar;
  • No pop-up or interstitial advertising;
  • No video pre-roll advertising;
  • No advertising in the calculator results panel itself.

We have configured our AdSense account to treat the Site as not child-directed, in line with the US COPPA and equivalent UK rules. See our Advertising & Cookies Policy for full details on what Google collects and how to opt out.

7. Data and tracking implications

Affiliate links typically involve the retailer setting a tracking cookie on your device when you click through, so they can attribute any subsequent purchase to the referring website. This cookie is set by the retailer, not by us, and is governed by the retailer’s own privacy policy and cookie practices.

If we ever do introduce affiliate links, we will ensure that:

  • The links are clearly marked so you know before clicking that an affiliate cookie may be set;
  • Our Cookie Policy is updated to explain which retailers’ cookies may be set when you click an affiliate link;
  • We only participate in programmes operated by reputable retailers with their own clear, GDPR-compliant privacy policies.

8. UK regulations we comply with

The following UK regulations and codes apply to affiliate marketing and commercial content disclosure. We commit to complying with all of them:

  • Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs) — prohibits unfair commercial practices including hidden advertising and failing to disclose commercial intent. Breach is a criminal offence.
  • ASA/CAP Code — the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing, enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority. Requires clear disclosure of affiliate links and sponsored content.
  • Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCC) — strengthened consumer protection rules including fake review prohibitions and clearer drip-pricing rules, in force from 2025.
  • UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 — governs any personal data processed in the course of affiliate marketing (see our Privacy Policy).
  • Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) — governs cookies set by affiliate links (see our Cookie Policy).
